We are so excited to be bringing you the “Shamrock Spotlight Series” on our blogs! The Yuengling Shamrock Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, 8k Races bring thousands of runners, of all ages, abilities and locations, to the Virginia Beach oceanfront every year! As J&A Racing Live Love Run Ambassadors, we decided we wanted to celebrate these races, J&A Racing, and our community by doing a series that highlights participants, both local and out of town, on their journey to this years’ races.

We were incredibly fortunate to get the response we did when asking for volunteers to be spotlighted, and are grateful for the opportunity to share their stories with you!

Training for the Shamrock Marathon

Courtney is a DC-based runner who definitely runs to eat. She recently completed her first marathon and is training for her second in March. Courtney loves exploring DC, traveling, her miniature dachshund, her church and losing herself in a good book.

Why you are running a Shamrock race in 2014? I love Virginia Beach (have vacationed there the past two years) and I heard SO MANY great things about Shamrock, I knew I wanted it to be my second marathon.

When did you start running? I ran track in high school then tapered off till law school. I’ve become more serious in the past year!

How many races have you done and what’s your favorite? Oh boy. I’ve run one full marathon, 4 half marathons, a bunch of 10 milers, 10ks and 5ks! I love the 10 miler distance! Long enough to be hard, but short enough that training doesn’t take over my life.

Where do you prefer to run? I love to run on the National Mall in DC.

What’s the longest distance you’ve run? 26.2!

What is the one thing you DON’T like about running? The injuries – I’ve been lucky to only have somewhat minor injuries, but it’s not fun!

Favorite post-run indulgence? BACON! No doubt.

Favorite running shoe? Love Mizunos!

Favorite song to run to? Eminem “Lose Yourself” – I know all the words, so can recite it to myself in my head as I run.

Favorite website to waste time on? Probably Twitter.

Favorite running moment? Crossing that finish line after my first marathon.

If you could pick one celebrity to run with, who would it be? Oprah! Life tips for EVERYBODY! :)

Training for the Shamrock Half Marathon

“I started my weight loss journey about two years ago and when I started I was 398lb and starting to develop medical problems. I am now over 150lb lighter.  Also I lost my brother Chuck DeLoach to cancer in 2009 and this weekend would have been the weekend of his 4oth birthday.  I decided that he loved to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day so this would be a perfect opportunity to honor him and compete in my first half marathon”

1. Why are you running Shamrock? I have gotten into running since my weight loss. I was going to wait till 2015 to do my first half. But with this landing on what would have been my brothers 40th birthday weekend. I figure this was a great way to honor him and a challenge to get ready for.

2. When did you start running? Back in September 2013

3. How many races have you done and what’s your favorite? I have done 7 5k, have a 10k planned on March 1st. My favorite was the Zombie Run back in October; it was like living out an episode of my favorite TV show The Walking Dead.

4. Where do you prefer to run? At the local park Green Hill Park down the road from where I live in Salem.

5. What’s the longest distance you’ve run? I did 9.8 miles so far a few weeks ago.

6. What is the one thing you DON’T like about running? The pain in my shins when I first really get going

7. Favorite post-run indulgence? My Cellucor vanilla protein mixed with some orange juice. Tastes like a Orange Creamsicle.

8. Favorite running shoe? Asics, Gel-Noosa Tri8

9. Favorite song to run to? Riot, Three Days Grace

10. Favorite website to waste time on? Myfitnesspal.com

11. Favorite running moment? Finishing second for my age group at the Resolution 5k in Roanoke, VA on January 1st

12. If you could pick one celebrity to run with, who would it be? Priest Holmes #31, Former RB for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was my favorite player as a kid and was a great sports role model.

Hitting the Pause Button

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it is what you see.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

Today is my eighth day of no running.

I’ve ignored the aches and pains. I’ve ignored the thoughts in my head that I need a break. I’ve ignored them all because I love running. None of aches were really that bad. I’d convince myself that I’d take a walk break if it got to be too much. If my run wasn’t being impacted, I could keep going.

Last April, after I finished my spring race schedule, I told myself I’d take a two week break. I could tell my body was out of balance. Nothing felt right. I went out for an easy run around the neighborhood, yet I couldn’t get my legs to work. I was barely running a 12 minute mile. I did give myself time to heal, but I never took a break. I saw doctors and modified my training, but I never took a break. All summer I tiptoed around my hip injuries.

This past December, as my fall schedule was coming to an end, I had the same feelings. My body was working against itself. It was fighting me on my runs. My knee hurt. My hips hurt. I made the same promises to myself. I would stop running if it got to be too much. A few weeks ago, the Sunday I ran along the Potomac River, I knew I had run too far. At mile 2, my ankle ached. I convinced myself that I’d turn around if it wasn’t warmed up by mile 3. By mile 4, it was worse than it was at mile 2, and I was much further from my car. Instead of walking back to my car (because I couldn’t call anyone for a ride), I ran 4 long, painful miles back to my starting point. I took a few days off. Speed work outs were easy again. By the weekend my body was back to rebelling.. I rested some more. Last Tuesday, after a five day break, I ran 800s. I nailed the workout. My 800 times were 30 seconds faster than they needed to be for my race goal. My ankle felt fine. Wednesday I woke up in pain. Thursday I hurt some more. I had decided to wait until Sunday to run. Sunday morning I woke up in more pain. My ankle wasn’t ready.

After an emotional meltdown, logic took over. At that point I was on five days of rest. My ankle wasn’t to the point where I knew I needed weeks off. I decided I needed to get myself back to the doctor before I ran again. I grounded myself from running.

Today is day 8. I know now why my ankle has been causing me so many problems. My peroneus muscles aren’t working. For the first time in almost a year, I finally (really) listened to my body. My doctor is treating my ankle with active release, therapy, and home exercises. I’m skipping one more long run this weekend, and I should be back in my running shoes by Monday, 13 days of rest.

Taking another step back, really listening to my body, and trusting myself is the best thing that could have happened to me right now. This was not part of my plan, but success and happiness are found when you step outside of yourself. This injury is giving me permission to just have fun (which is what I’ve wanted to do all along). It’s taken the pressure off. It’s given me clarity.

“The quality of your life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty you can comfortably deal with.” ~ Tony Robbins

With the Shamrock Half Marathon 36 days away, this will have an impact on the race clock. I’m okay with that. My current race goal is 1:55. That may or may not happen. I’m okay with that too. Right now I should be hitting all my key workouts in this training cycle. I’m not. I’m practicing yoga. I just signed up for a spin class.

I have 36 days to pick myself up, dust myself off, and make the best of life (not running, life!). Happiness happens when you learn to let go and bounce back.

SHAMROCK SPOTLIGHT SERIES: MAR from MAR ON THE RUN

Image

Name: Mar

Age: 39

Current City: Washington, DC

Training for the Shamrock Marathon

Why you are running a Shamrock race in 2014? I was looking to run my first full marathon, and hear great reviews about Shamrock so I signed up!

When did you start running? Started running in college but more for exercise and not sport.  Ran my first race in 2010 and have been running and racing ever since.

Image

How many races have you done and what’s your favorite? In total well over 35!!  Includes 13 half marathons, numerous 5ks, 10ks, 5 and 10 milers.

Where do you prefer to run? Outside if I can get it.  DC has an amazing backdrop of monuments to run by and through.

What’s the longest distance you’ve run?  About 15 miles (for now!)

What is the one thing you DON’T like about running? Getting started.  First mile or so is always hardest to get rhythm going.

Favorite post-run indulgence?  Froyo for sure!  Beer after a big race if offered.

Favorite running shoe? Asics GT-2170

Favorite song to run to? At the moment totally rocking Timber by Pitbull and Ke$ha

Favorite website to waste time on? Entertainment Weekly (ew.com).  They have a lot of great TV show recaps I like to peruse even if I don’t watch a show. And you get mindless celebrity “news” without being too gossipy!

Favorite running moment? Hands raised crossing the finish at the Pittsburgh half last May knowing I PR’d

If you could pick one celebrity to run with, who would it be? Ryan Gosling, isn’t that the answer to everything?

GOOD LUCK MAR!

Breathing Room, January Edition

This year I’m making a conscious effort to live my words, breathing room. Every day I want to make sure I bring this to my life. Over conversation with a friend, we decided the best way to be intentional about our words was to take time to capture these moments. As I collected the photos I had already taken in January that symbolized my moments of breath, I noticed a theme: nature, family, and running. These snapshots, these moments of breath, are my gratitude practice for this year.

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.” ~Henry David Thoreau

Next month I will have twenty eight photos to share: twenty eight moments of breathing room, twenty eight moments of intentional living, twenty eight moments of gratitude.
